Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves into an “S” or “C” shape, rather than remaining straight.

This abnormal curvature can lead to significant pain and challenges in maintaining proper posture. It may also compress the nerves that run through the vertebrae, causing wear and tear on both the vertebrae and the discs.

Scoliosis not only brings physical discomfort but can also take an emotional toll. Around 65% of scoliosis cases have an unknown cause (idiopathic scoliosis), 15% are congenital (present from birth), and 10% stem from neuromuscular problems.

Chiropractic care offers a holistic approach to managing scoliosis. Chiropractors perform thorough neurological and structural exams to pinpoint compressed nerves and their effects on the body. Their goal is to relieve pain, correct posture, and enhance overall well-being, providing a comprehensive path to a healthier life.

¿Qué tipos de escoliosis existen?

Lumbar Scoliosis

Characterized by a deviation of the spinal curve in the lower back. This type of scoliosis can cause pain and limited mobility in the lumbar region.

Cervical Scoliosis

Involves a deviation of the spinal curve affecting the cervical vertebrae. This can lead to neck pain, stiffness, and potentially headaches due to nerve compression.

Cervico-dorsal Scoliosis

The curvature affects both the cervical and dorsal (thoracic) vertebrae. This type of scoliosis can cause a combination of neck and upper back discomfort, impacting posture and overall spinal alignment.

Dorsal (Thoracic) Scoliosis

Deviation of the spinal curve affecting the thoracic vertebrae. It often results in visible rib cage deformities and can impact respiratory function due to reduced space for the lungs.

Dorso-lumbar Scoliosis

The curvature of the spine affects both the lower and middle back areas. This type combines the characteristics of lumbar and thoracic scoliosis, potentially causing pain and functional limitations across a broader section of the spine.

Degrees of Deviation

Scoliosis is often measured in degrees to determine its severity:

  • Mild scoliosis: 10-20 degrees of deviation
  • Moderate scoliosis: 21-40 degrees of deviation
  • Severe scoliosis: Over 40 degrees of deviation
Understanding the type and degree of scoliosis is crucial for effective treatment and management, helping to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
